How to serve, by age
6–8 mo
Steam, peel and mash, thinning with warm water or milk until smooth and slippery.
9–11 mo
Soft thick strips and small pieces; for roasted sweet potato, pick the soft inner flesh.
12 mo+
Steamed pieces or sweet-potato congee.
Choking risk: Low
Sweet potato is dry and sticky-soft; a big dry mouthful can pack in the throat. Serve small pieces with water or milk alongside.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Sweet Potato is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.
Common questions
- More gas after eating sweet potato — normal?
- Sweet potato commonly causes gas; cut the portion down. If there is clear bloating or discomfort, pause it and ask your pediatrician.
Practical tips
- Choose slender, spindle-shaped sweet potatoes — less stringy fiber.
- Purple sweet potato is drier; thin the mash with milk.
