from 6 mochoking risk: Lowcommon allergen

'No cow's milk before one' does not mean 'no yogurt before one.' Unsweetened plain yogurt can start at 6 months and doubles as a dip for finger foods.

Your food log

How to serve, by age

6–8 mo

Unsweetened plain whole-milk yogurt, by the small spoonful, or offered for dipping fruit strips.

9–11 mo

Mixed with fruit purée or soft oats.

12 mo+

As the family eats it — still unsweetened.

Choking risk: Low

Yogurt itself is not a choking concern; a heaped spoonful of thick Greek yogurt can still gag a baby. Offer small spoonfuls.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Yogurt is made from cow's milk, and milk protein is a common allergen. Start with a small amount and watch the response; for a known cow's-milk-protein allergy, ask your pediatrician before serving.

Common questions

Why is yogurt fine when milk as a drink is not?
Before age 1 the limit is on cow's milk as a main drink (see Cow's Milk); yogurt is a small side food, and fermentation changes the protein structure, which some babies handle more easily. Two different rules, not a contradiction.
Are 'kids' yogurts' better?
Read the label: many add sugar and flavorings. The ideal ingredient list is just milk and live cultures.

Practical tips

  • Spread yogurt on a banana strip for easier self-feeding.
  • Take the chill off refrigerated yogurt for young babies.
