from 12 mochoking risk: Low

Absolutely off the menu before age 1 — the risk is not allergy but infant botulism. After the first birthday it is still a sweetener to keep minimal.

Your food log

Read this first: No honey before age 1

Honey can carry C. botulinum spores that a baby's gut cannot yet resist, causing infant botulism — rare but serious. Before the first birthday, no honey in any form, including honey water and processed foods made with honey.

How to serve, by age

Under 1 yr

No honey in any form: straight, in water, in baked goods, as a flavoring — all of it is out.

1 yr+

A tiny amount for flavor is fine; later and less is better.

Choking risk: Low

No choking risk. The hazard here is infant botulism: honey can carry C. botulinum spores, and a baby's gut cannot yet keep them in check.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Honey is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.

Common questions

Raw or home-farm honey is more natural — is that okay?
No. The spore risk has nothing to do with how natural the honey is; less-processed honey is, if anything, riskier. Before age 1 the answer is simply no.
The baby keeps reaching for my honey water — what helps?
Set up the baby's own cup (plain warm water) beforehand, and avoid sharing adult drinks in front of the baby.

Practical tips

  • If grandparents help with feeding, put "honey" and "whole nuts" on the same fridge note.
  • Read labels on bread and biscuits — honey hides in processed food.
