How to serve, by age
8–10 mo
Cut the crusts off soft toast and make finger-thick strips — briefly toasted to hold their shape, or dipped in milk to soften — for your baby to grip.
10–12 mo
Tear into small pieces.
12 mo+
Small soft pieces, self-fed.
Choking risk: Moderate
Hard crusts, dry flaky pastry and whole hunks that ball up sticky are the risks. Remove the crust early on and keep pieces small.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Wheat is the base (gluten, a common allergen); recipes may also contain egg, milk or sesame. Read the ingredient list; first servings small and observed.
Common questions
- Which breads are off the table?
- Anything with whole nuts, large dried fruit, flaky pastry or cream fillings is not for early eaters — and no honey bread in any form before age 1 (see Honey).
Practical tips
- Plain toast spread with mashed avocado is a classic snack.
- Sugar content varies widely; pick unsweetened, lower-sodium loaves.
