How to serve, by age
6–8 mo
Simmer rolled oats with water or milk until very soft and gluey; mash a little further and serve warm.
9–11 mo
Soft oatmeal stirred with fruit purée or crumbled egg yolk.
12 mo+
Oatmeal and soft oat pancakes both work.
Choking risk: Low
Fully cooked oatmeal is low risk. Dry and puffed cereals are crisp and crumbly — hold them back early.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Oats is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.
Common questions
- Can I just soak instant oatmeal and serve it?
- Read the box: many instant products add sugar, creamer and flavoring — wrong for babies. Choose rolled oats whose only ingredient is oats, and cook them.
Practical tips
- Soak oats ten minutes before cooking; they soften faster.
- Oats simmered with mashed banana make a reliably accepted breakfast.
