How to serve, by age
Under 3 yr
Tangyuan, niangao, mochi and ciba are not recommended at all before age 3 — there is no safe way to serve them at this age.
3 yr+
Small pieces, small bites, seated, supervised. Whole tangyuan still should not be handed over.
Choking risk: High
A sticky glutinous mass that lodges in the airway is extremely hard to dislodge. This is one of the few foods where the guidance is a straight prohibition: not before age 3.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Sticky Rice Cakes is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.
Common questions
- Everyone eats tangyuan at the festival and the baby wants some — what do I do?
- Offer a different festive food: soft steamed bun or fruit skewers. The tradition can wait a few years.
Practical tips
- Give grandparents a heads-up early: niangao, tangyuan and ciba are all in this category.
- At checkups, it helps to have the doctor reinforce the rule to the family.
